Instructions
24-hour urine. Refrigerate 24-hour specimens during collection. Protect from light.
Transport Container
Protect from light. Transfer 2 mL aliquot from well mixed 24-hour urine to an amber transport tube (preferred) or protect the container from light with foil or place in an amber bag. (Min: 1 mL) Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and test request form.

Refrigerated.
Specimen Stability
Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 30 days
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Received room temperature. Not protected from light. Samples with a pH less than 4.0.

Clinical Significance
Porphyria is a group of distinct disorders characterized by the abnormal accumulation of porphyrins or porphyrin precursors. Porphyrin Fractionation of Urine is useful in diagnosing porphyrin cutanea tarda, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria.
