Instructions
Green (no gel) (sodium or lithium heparin) or green plasma separator tube (lithium heparin).


Transport Container
Centrifuge green top and aliquot within 1 hour of collection 1 mL plasma (Min: 0.2 mL) into a standard transport tube. If green plasma separator tube, centrifuge within 1 hour of collection and transport.


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 7 days; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Clinical Significance
The presence of free hemoglobin in plasma is an indication of intravascular hemolysis resulting from numerous conditions, among which include paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), sickle-cell disease (SCD), thalassemias, hereditary spherocytosis, microangiopathic hemolytic anemias, pyruvate kinase deficiency, ABO mismatch transfusion reaction, cardiopulmonary bypass or mechanical heart valve-induced anemia.
