Instructions
External ear (otitis externa):
1. Clean with 70% alcohol and allow to dry.
2. Carefully pass a swab to the affected area and vigorously swab [surface swabbing may miss streptococcal cellulitis].
Otitis media:
Carefully pass a sterile swab [a mini tip NP swab will work well] into the ear and sample as close to the eardrum as possible.
Note: Tympanocentesis is the specimen of choice if anaerobic cultures are ordered.
