Message
Note on the requisition the nature of the lesion [such as human or animal bite] as this is extremely important to culture evaluation. Anaerobic culture is appropriate for material from abscesses, but must be ordered as a separate test. The same sample may be used for both cultures.

Instructions
Abscess, ulcer, Bite [human/animal], Suture site, boil: 1. Carefully clean the surface of the lesion with sterile non bacteriostatic saline to remove colonizing organisms. 2. If the lesion is closed and material can be aspirated with a needle and syringe, that provides the best sample. 3. If the lesion is open or if aspiration is not an option, obtain swab material FROM AS DEEP IN THE LESION AS POSSIBLE, vigorously rubbing the base of the lesion. Avoid sampling surface exudate that will contain colonizing bacteria. 4. Transport Container
Acceptable containers include: sterile screw capped container, aerobic/anaerobic swab transport system, or anaerobic transport system.
