Instructions
Draw prior to antibiotic therapy, if possible. Please be specific about site of draw.
Collect both aerobic and anaerobic bottles.
Note: Optimal: 8-10 mL into each bottle. If only enough blood has been drawn to fill one bottle, inoculate the aerobic vial only.
Peripheral or line-drawn blood:
1. Prepare draw site using protocols for your institution.
2. Before inoculating bottles remove plastic flip top and disinfect the rubber septum with an alcohol wipe.
3. No more than 3 sets of blood cultures submitted in a 24 hour period.
4. Timing between collections will be governed by need to initiate therapy & other clinical circumstances.
Pediatric collection should use Pediatric Bottle. Pediatric optimal: 1-4 mL .
