Instructions
Lt. blue (sodium citrate). Fill light blue-top tubes as far as vacuum will allow and mix by gentle inversion 3-4 times.
Transport Container
Centrifuge light blue-top tube 15 minutes at approx. 1500 g within 60 minutes of collection. Using a plastic pipette, remove plasma, taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and place into a plastic vial. Centrifuge a second time and transfer platelet-poor plasma into standard plastic transport tube. Freeze immediately 1 mL plasma (Min. 0.5 mL).
Transport Temperature
Frozen.
Specimen Stability
Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 30 days
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross Hemolysis, Grossly Lipemic, Grossly Icteric
Methodology

Setup Schedule
Monday & Wednesday & Friday
Report Available
1-3 days (From receipt at performing laboratory)
Reference Range

Clinical Significance
The precursor of plasmin is plasminogen, plasmin lyses fibrin clots. Activity is increased in pregnancy and as an acute phase reactant. Rare hereditary deficiency of plasminogen predisposes to venous thrombosis. Low activity is associated with DIC, liver disease, and increased risk of thrombosis.
