Instructions
An air dried smear prepared by rolling a swab over the surface of the vaginal wall. The swab is then rolled over the surface of a microscope slide and the slide is allowed to air dry. (Client supply (Nugent Collection Kit ) # B30175)

Submit the slide in a slide carrier.

Normal: bacterial morphotypes consistent with normal vaginal flora
An interpretive message based upon the Nugent Score will be reported. Also reported: the presence of clue cells, Trichomonads, or yeast. .However, Trichomonas vaginalis RNA by TMA (test code TRICHV) is the most sensitive means of diagnosing Trichomonas infections. Tests specifically for Chlamydia and Neisseria gonorrhoeae should be ordered separately.

Clinical Significance
Provides laboratory evidence for the presence or absence of bacterial vaginosis. The graded gram stain is still considered the gold standard for recognition of bacterial vaginosis.
