Instructions
It is preferable for the patient to be off medications for three days prior to collection. Patient should avoid tobacco, tea, coffee, for three days prior to specimen collection. Common antihypertensives (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, alpha and beta blockers) cause minimal or no interference. Medications which are alpha agonists (Aldomet), alpha blockers (Dibenzyline) should be avoided 18-24 hours prior to specimen collection.

24-hour urine. Refrigerate 24-hour specimen during collection.


Transport Container
Transfer a 5 mL aliquot from a well-mixed 24-hour collection to a transport container. (Min: 1.5 mL) Record total volume on transport container and test request form. Urine with a pH of 6 or less can be transported without preservatives if transported within 48 hours of the completion of collection. If longer than 48 hours, adjust the pH of the Urine with 6 N HCl to pH <3 OR send unpreserved urine frozen.

Refrigerated or Frozen.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: 10 days (preserved); Refrigerated: 48 hours (unpreserved-with pH < or =  6), 14 days (preserved); Frozen:  30 days (unpreserved), 90 days (preserved)


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Urine collected in boric acid.
