Limitations
Basal concentrations of >100 pg/mL have been found to have 100% positive predictive value for medullary thyroid cancer. Lower concentrations may be observed in some patients with clinically apparent medullary thyroid cancer.
Reference Range
Effective 8/24/2020
< 1 month: Not Established
1-5 months: < or = 29 pg/mL
6-12 months: < or = 18 pg/mL
13 months -2 years: < or = 10 pg/mL
3-6 years: < or = 7 pg/mL
7-17 years: < or = 6 pg/mL
> or = 18 years Male: < or = 10 pg/mL
> or = 18 years Female: < or = 5 pg/mL
This test was performed using the Siemens (DPC) Chemiluminescent method. Values obtained with different assay methods cannot be used interchangeably. Calcitonin levels, regardless of value, should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of the disease.

Clinical Significance
Calcitonin concentration is increased in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma. Calcitonin concentrations may be used to monitor disease.
