Includes Gram Stain.

Instructions
Body Fluid: pleural, abdominal, joint, pericardial.
Aseptically collect material, if blood culture bottles are inoculated at the bedside, do NOT use the entire sample . Submit some fluid (at least 1 mL) in the indicated transport. If sample volume is less than 1 mL, submit entire sample in the indicated transport.

Some specimens will contain multiple and/or fastidious organisms. Inoculating the entire sample into blood culture bottles may result in the failure to recover some members of the mixed flora or fastidious organism. When body fluids are submitted in blood culture bottles, we request an additional aliquot in a med fusion transport acceptable for body fluid. The aliquot will be used to inoculate solid media as some rare, fastidious organisms will not grow [or grow slowly] in our blood culture bottles. Do not submit a swab of the fluid; fluid must be submitted.

Transport Container
Transport containers include: aerobic/anaerobic transport system, sterile screw capped container, or a capped syringe securely sealed without a needle. Submit as much sample as possible up to 40 mL; fluid volumes <1 mL may not yield the pathogen.
