Clinical Significance

The VDRL test is a nontreponemal (lipoidal antigen) test used to aid in the diagnosis of syphilis or to monitor a patient on treatment.

Serum antibody titers from RPR, VDRL, and other nontreponemal (lipoidal antigen) tests should not be used interchangeably. Therefore, patient specimens should be tested using the same nontreponemal (lipoidal antigen) test method and specimen type.
