Transport Container
Draw blood in a light blue-top tube containing 3.2% sodium citrate. Correct ratio of blood to citrate is critical. Do not overfill or underfill. Mix gently by inverting 3-4 times.
   
For non-heparinized patients, maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not uncap. Non-heparinized patients are stable up to 72 hours at room temperature. Heparinized patients are stable for 24 hours at room temperature.
   
If testing cannot be completed within stability limits, centrifuge 15 minutes at 1500g within one hour of collection. Transfer plasma to a transport tube and freeze immediately. Transport on dry ice.

The conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin is critical to normal hemostasis. Deficiency can produce mild to severe bleeding disorders.
