Qualitative CMV testing on Neonatal patients <= 21 days old. ALL positive swab samples will need confirmation with a urine sample.

Preferred Specimen
Saliva flocked swab specimen transported in a BD UVT (1mL or 3mL), Remel M4RT, M4, and M6 transport media or urine specimens.


Minimum Volume
Saliva flocked swab specimen in transport media: 1mL
Urine: 500uL

Transport Temperature
Frozen


Specimen Stability
Saliva flocked swab with media: 7 days at 2-8°C, 14 days at -20°C (frozen is recommended for transport).
Urine: 3 days at -20°C (frozen is recommended for transport).


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Wooden swabs, calcium alginate swabs, any media not validated at WVUH, eSwabs will be rejectd, ORA collect swabs will be rejected
