Clinical Significance
The primary health concern is early-onset neonatal infection (early-onset disease, EOD), which occurs within 7 days after birth and is caused by vertical transmission from mother to infant during labor and delivery. Infants that acquire early-onset infection typically present with respiratory symptoms or signs of sepsis within the first 24 to 48 hours following delivery; meningitis is also observed, but with less frequency.
