Includes
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: Flash freezing of properly oriented muscle, cryostat serial sections, enzyme and substantive histochemistry.
CNS TISSUE: Routine neuropathological examination, and histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and/or electron microscopy as indicated.
KIDNEY BIOPSY: Light microscopic, immunofluorescent and electron microscopic examination of the renal tissue.
SURGICAL TISSUE , LIVER BIOPSY or ENDOMYCARDIAL TISSUE: Histopathologic examination of tissue sections stained with H&E, special stains, and additional analysis as indicated


Preferred Specimen
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: In a sterile container with lid, skeletal muscle biopsy is to be placed on gauze moistened with sterile saline.
CNS TISSUE: CNS tissue in a sterile container or a container with 10% neutral buffered formalin.
KIDNEY BIOPSY: Kidney biopsy collection kit obtained from Pathology.
SURGICAL TISSUE , LIVER BIOPSY or ENDOMYCARDIAL TISSUE: Tissue in a sterile collection cup or specimen container with 10% neutral buffered formalin.


Minimum Volume
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: 0.5 cubic centimeter piece of skeletal muscle.
CNS TISSUE: One entire specimen, at least 40 mg.
KIDNEY BIOPSY: Kidney biopsy specimen with glomeruli present.
SURGICAL TISSUE , LIVER BIOPSY or ENDOMYCARDIAL TISSUE: Surgical tissue: greater than 2-3 mm or Liver Biopsy 1-3 mm

 


Instructions
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: Testing must be scheduled with histology department Monday through Friday on dayshift. Cut-off time is 3pm.
KIDNEY BIOPSY: Call Histology department at 304-293-6014 before specimen is collected. A pathologist or histotechnologist must be present at collection to evaluate specimen acceptability.

Specimen Stability
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: Unstable, call Pathology (304-293-6014) immediately after collection.
CNS TISSUE: Unstable. Deliver to Gross Room immediately. After hours add 10% neutral buffered formalin (obtained in Gross Room) to specimen container.
KIDNEY BIOPSY: Unstable, must be submitted immediately to pathologist-incharge. Tissue in Special Tissue Fixative (see below) should not be held more than four days.
SURGICAL TISSUE , LIVER BIOPSY or ENDOMYCARDIAL TISSUE: Unstable. Deliver to Gross Room immediately. After hours add 10% neutral buffered formalin (obtained in Gross Room) to specimen container


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
SKELETAL MUSCLE BIOPSY: Dried or inadequately handled specimen. Unlabeled or improperly labeled specimen. Specimen in formalin. Specimen floating in saline.
CNS TISSUE o rSURGICAL TISSUE , LIVER BIOPSY or ENDOMYCARDIAL TISSUE : Dried or inadequately handeled specimens. Unabeled or improperly labeled specimen.
