Includes
Histopathologic examination of tissue sections stained with H&E, special stains, and additinal analysis as indicated.
Preferred Specimen
- General/ Routine specimens: Tissue in a sterile collection cup or specimen container with 10% neutral buffered formalin.
- Kidney/Medical Renal Biopsy: Renal collection kit required. Must be scheduled with Histology department. Monday-Friday only, 07:00-15:00. Call 304-293-6014. A pathologist or histotechnologist must be present at collection to evaluate specimen acceptability.
- Skeletal Muscle Biopsy: Must be scheduled with Histology department. Monday-Friday only, 07:00-15:00. Call 304-293-6014.
- Specimen size: 1.0-0.5 cm
- Specimen is to be places on gauze moistened with sterile saline. Refrigerate.
- Clamps are to be removed from the specimen.

Specimen Stability
- General/ Routine Specimens: Stable only with 10% neutral buffered formalin. If 10% formalin is not available, deliver to Gross Room immediately. After hours, 10% formalin may be obtained in Gross Room and added to specimen container.
- Kidney/Medical Renal Biopsy: Renal collection kit required. Must be scheduled with Histology department. Monday- Friday only, 07:00-1500. Call 304-293-6014
- Skeletal Muscle Biopsy: Specimen is to be placed on gauze moistened with sterile saline. Refrigerate. Must be scheduled iwth Histology Department. Monday-Friday only, 07:00-15:00. Call 304-293-6014.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Dried or inadequately handled specimen, unlabeled or irmproperly labeled specimen.
