The HYPERCOAGULABLE TESTING – ORDERSET should not be routinely used for inpatients. This orderset assists providers who order
laboratory tests to evaluate and manage patients with thrombophilia. Guidelines for thrombophilia testing are available: Venous
thromboembolic diseases: the management of venous thromboembolic diseases and the role of thrombophilia testing. Clinical guideline 144.

Preferred Specimen
This test requires the following 7 tubes be collected:   One (1) Lavender Top tube   One (1) Red Top Tube   One (1) Dark Green Top tube (on ice)   Four (4) Blue Top tubes 


Instructions
Only the green top tube should be received on ice.
Heparin interferes with this assay. If patient is on heparin, please call the laboratory


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated, green top tube on ice. DO NOT put the other tubes on ice.


Specimen Stability
 Unstable, deliver to lab immediately. 


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Clotted or undrefilled blue top tubes. Lavender top, red top  and blue top tube sreceived on ice.

Clinical Significance
The following are general guidelines for thrombophilia testing:
- Do not offer thrombophilia testing to patients who are continuing anticoagulation treatment.
- Consider testing for antiphospholipid antibodies in patients who have had unprovoked DVT or PE if it is planned to stop anticoagulation
   treatment.
- Consider testing for hereditary thrombophilia in patients who have had unprovoked DVT or PE and who have a first‑degree relative who
   has had DVT or PE if it is planned to stop anticoagulation treatment.
- Do not offer thrombophilia testing to patients who have had provoked DVT or PE.
- Do not routinely offer thrombophilia testing to first‑degree relatives of people with a history of DVT or PE and thrombophilia
