Test Code
LAB304804
Preferred Specimen
One 6 mL lavender top tube
Instructions
Received in Sunquest by Blood Bank only.
Clinical Significance
Rh(D) immune globulin is a concentrate of primarily IgG anti-D. It is injected to Rh negative women, during pregnancy, to avoid the
development of anti-D (e.g. alloimmunization) in order to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn. An intravenous form of Rh immune
globulin is available from the pharmacy (WinRho) which is used for the treatment of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura.
This product should be administered by intramuscular injection to eligible mothers within 72 hours following the delivery of an Rh positive
baby, at the termination of a pregnancy, at 28 weeks antepartum, and following any procedure or event that may lead to fetomaternal
hemorrhage (FMH).
Once a sample (EDTA lavender top tube) is received it takes between 1 to 3 hours to screen the mother for FMH. The FMH screen
determines the proper dosage of RhIgG.
