Methodology
Immunohistochemisty, (IHC)

Clinical Significance
This antibody is primarily used by neuropathologists. Anti-Neuronal Nuclei (NeuN) specifically recognizes the DNA-binding, neuron-specific protein NeuN, which is present in most central and peripheral nervous system neuronal cell types. IHC staining is primarily seen in the nucleus of the neurons, with lighter staining in the cytoplasm. Developmentally, immunoreactivity is first observed shortly after neurons have become postmitotic, no staining has been observed in proliferative zones.
