Preferred Specimen

Bronchial Alveolar Lavage (BAL) in asterile vial or container

Minimum Volume

1 ml BAL

Instructions

If multiple samples on one patient are received, cell counts can be performed if clinically indicated. However a differential will be performed on a single sample. Please designate which sample should receive the differential.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 30 minutes Refrigerated: 24 hours however significant sample degeneration occurs after 2 hours.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Grossly bloody or excess mucus in specimen
Any slides submitted for testing or review must be labeled with two patient identifiers. Acceptable identifiers include Name, MRN, Birth date, Accession/SID.
