Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Non-validated sample types will be sent to a Referene Laboratory. Culturette swab placed into a media other than Remel M4RT Media or BD UVT Media. Calcium alginate swabs will be rejected.
Methodology
Performed by PCR using the Simplexa HSV 1 and 2 Direct assay and 3M Integrated Cyclers using an FDA cleared assay
Setup Schedule
Sunday-Saturday
Reference Range
Negative for HSV1 and HSV2 DNA
Clinical Significance
Test results must be interpreted in conjunction with clinical history, epidemiological data and other laboratory findings. Negative results do
not exclude HSV infections of the CNS and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment or patient management decisions. For
encephalitis patients with a negative HSV PCR result who have a syndrome compatible with HSV infection, consider repeating this test in
3-7 days. Infections caused by other viral or bacterial pathogens are not excluded by this test.
