ABO, Rh, and Antibody Screen. A positive screen will automatically initiate an antibody identification. Crossmatching of RBC units either serologically or electronically is included.

One 6 mL lavender top tube
Instructions
Specimen must be appropriately labeled if intended for pretransfusion compatibility testing. Specimens are labeled by using Positive patient identity by barcoding the patient's wristband, printing the label and sign the label on the signature line. If electronic patient identification is not available a hand written label must be done. Specimen must have hand written label containing patient name, hospital number, date of birth, date collected, phlebotomist’s initials, and witnesses’ initials.

Clinical Significance
The type and cross procedure is requested when the potential for blood use is high (eg. trauma, open heart surgery, etc.). The physician
will request a crossmatch along with an ABO and Rh(D) blood type and antibody screen. In the crossmatch, ABO compatibility of the patient with donor blood is confirmed.
