VERIFYNOW ASPIRIN TEST
Test CodeLAB1791
CPT Codes
85576
Preferred Specimen
Sample MUST be collected in kit provided by Hematology Lab (304-598-4230) or POC Lab.
• Peripheral Draw: Sample MUST be collected with a 21 gauge needle/butterfly and a Blue Top waste tube must be drawn first. Transfer devices must be at least 21 gauge as well.
• Line collection: Whole blood sample obtained form an indwelling catheter should only be collected after sufficient discard (5mL) has been drawn.
• If collecting other sample, this test must be collected first.
• Sample MUST be hand delivered to laboratory. Do NOT send through the pneumatic tube system.
Blood must be filled to arrow on the label.

Instructions
Sample must be received within four hours of collection.
Transport Temperature
Ambient
Specimen Stability
Unstable, transport to lab by hand at room temperature. Testing must be performed within 4 hours of collection.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Improper tube used (not from provided kit), tube not properly filled to black arrow (over or under filed can cause rejection), clotted sample, gross hemolysis, no waste tube collected first and specimens sent in thepneumatic tube system. Griener tubes are the only acceptable tube for this test. Fill tube to blank line- do notoverfill.
Methodology
Platelet Aggregation/ VerifyNow
Setup Schedule
Sunday - Saturday
Clinical Significance
≥ 550 ARU: Platelet dysfunction consistent with aspirin effect NOT detected
≤ 550 ARU: Platelet dysfunction consistent with aspirirn effect DETECTED
Note: Aspirin Reaction Units (ARU) inidcate the level of thromboxane A2-mediated activation of GPIIb/IIIa receptors involved in platelet
aggregation. ARU<550 indicate platelet dysfunction consistent with aspirin effect. ARU ≥ 550 suggest NO platelet dysfunction due to
aspirin effect.
