Clinical Significance
Amyloid precursor protein (APP) IHC is used as an aid to identify APP in Alzheimer disease. APP is found in Alzheimer disease associated plaques, large pyramidal cells, neurons, astrocytes, and microglia. Histologic features of Alzheimer disease include abundant neurofibrillary tangles, neuropil threads, and neuritic or "senile" plaques. The main component of senile plaque amyloid is referred to as beta amyloid, which is derived from APP. The patient’s clinical history and results of other diagnostic tests should be considered when interpreting staining results.
