Clinical Significance
CD163 IHC is used to identify cells of monocytic/histiocytic lineage, which express CD163 late in maturation. CD163 is a scavenger receptor for the hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex that has better specificity for monocytic/histiocytic lineage compared to CD68. In normal lymphoid tissue,  staining of histiocytes in the paracortex and follicle center (tingible body macrophages) is seen. CD163 IHC is usually negative in acute myeloid  leukemias with monocytic differentiation.
