Preferred Specimen
Respiratory, tissue, fluid or aspirate samples in sterile leak-proof container. Swab acceptable (non-OR locations) if dedicated for AFB culture.
Minimum Volume
1mL Respiratory,1mL Fluids, no minimum requirement for Tissue. Swabs: Suboptimal.
Not accepted for OR locations (please collect fluid or tissue). For sites not amenable to biopsy or aspiration, a single dedicated swab may be submitted. (i.e. multiple cultures are NOT performed on a single swab).

Instructions
Do not send specimens with attached tubing
1. Collect 3 first-morning sputum specimens for culture and smear for patients with clinical findings compatible with tuberculosis ( 3
separate days).
2. Transport specimens to the Micro lab immediately, ideally within 30 minutes of collection.
3. Specimens submitted on swabs (non-OR locations) must be designated for AFB culture. (i.e., multiple cultures are NOT
performed on a single swab)
4. AFB Recovery from E-Swabs has not been validated by WVUH Microbiology Lab.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Intra-operative specimen submitted on swab. Twenty-four hour specimens are not acceptable for culture. Stool cultures for AFB will only be performed on HIV positive patients. Urine in a grey top tube.
