Clinical Significance
This test, performed by indirect immunofluorescence, is used by specialists to evaluate patients with positive antinuclear antibody results and clinical suspicion of lupus, as well as other systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs).
This is the primary sub-serology test used to evaluate patients with signs and symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is also used to monitor patients with documented SLE for changes in disease activity, and to assess risk for lupus nephritis. Double-stranded DNA antibody testing - as for other autoimmune subserology testing - should only be performed if a prior positive ANA test result has been obtained. Few sub-serology tests have value in ANA-negative patients.
