Positive results are consistent with current or past infection with HSV-1 or HSV-2. A single positive result should not be used to diagnose
recent infections. Negative or equivocal antibody results can be seen in acute and subacute stages of infection; neither rule out remote
exposure. In these cases, follow-up in 10-14 days is recommended if clinical suspicion for infection persists.
