Preferred Specimen
Urine, random specimen in a clean plastic collection cup 


Minimum Volume
5 mL urine


Instructions
Review color of samples and perform urine dipstick testing for occult blood and pH. Aliquot 5-10 mls of sample into a tube with 2 patient identifiers. The pH of the sample must be 8 or higher for submission. Depending on the pH of the sample, add 1-3 drops of concentrated  NaOH to the aliquot, mix well and repeat pH testing. Repeat step 4 until the pH of the sample is 8or greater. If unable to adjust eh pH of urine, consider sendout serum myoglobin.

Refrigerated: 24 hours (must be at pH of 8-9 within 2 hours of collection) 


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Contaminated samples.
For UML Clients: urine not at pH of 8 or higher before submission. Pleases see instructions to correct the ph.
