Preferred Specimen
DEEP STERILE SITE: Fluid, aspirated material or tissue of deep/sterile sites labeled as tospecific anatomic source should be collected for culture and submitted in a sterile container or syringe chamber. Although swabs may be used (Eswab preferred over standard aerobic culture swab), actual tissue, aspirate, or fluid is ideal.
TISSUE:Representative tissue sample in sterile leak-proff container. If unable to deliver to lab immediately, sterile saline should be added to
prevent dessication.
FLUID: Fluid in a sterile leak-proof container
ASPIRATE: Aspirate in syringe chamber or other sterile leak-proof container
SWAB: Sample non-superficial, normally-sterile site using swabs below. NOTE: Skin or mucosal surfaces are not steriles sites and
should generally be ordered as LAB503- WOUND, SUPERFICIAL/ NONSTERILE SITE, CULTURE AND GRAM STAIN. E-Swab(preferred)
