Preferred Specimen
Sterile fluid in one aerobic(green) or pediatric (yellow) bottle. If fluid volume >5mL AND anaerobic coverage is needed, also inoculate one anaerobic(orange) bottle.Optimal Collection Volume: 5-10 mL fluid in each bottle
Instructions
Fluid must be inoculated into blood culture bottles using sterile techniques. If gram stains is required, a portion of the specimen must be provided separately (i.e. not inoculated into bottle). Submission of a spearate aliquot will also improve recovery of certain fastidious organisms

Clinical Significance
Submission of a separate aliqout in a sterile container should be considered in order to improve recovery of specific fastidious organisms (e.g. Neisseria species). Positive cultures will be called to licensesd caregiver.
