Body fluid cholesterol results can be useful in differentiatinig chylous and pseudochylous pleural effusions, as well as differentiating
malignant and nonmalignant ascites. Results >45 mg/dL in pleural fluids are consistent with exudative processes, and results >32 mg/dL
in peritoneal fluids suggest malignant ascites.
