Bacterial culture for non-Group A Streptococcal etiologies of pharyngitis (e.g. Groups C, F or G Streptococcus sp., Arcanobacterium sp., etc.). Gram stains are not performed from this specimen type. For Group A Streptococcus detection, LAB123750 (streptococcus pyogenese, PCR) is recommended.

Instructions
With a tongue blade, depress the tongue so the back of the throat is clearly visible. Insert the collection swab to the back of the throat and swab tonsillar areas, the posterior pharynx, and any areas of inflammation, ulceration, or exudation, taking care to avoid bucal or tongue mucosal contamination. A good gag reflex indicates a satisfactory specimen.

Specimens should be received in the laboratory within two hours of collection.

Ambient: 2 hours, refrigerate if time exceeds two hours.
