Preferred Specimen
Please obtain the Quantiferon TB Gold Collection Kit from the Main Laboratory or the POC Laboratory.
1.0 mL Whole Blood into each of 4 tubes included in the collection kit (grey/nil, then the gold & green TB tubes, and then the purple/mitogen tube preferred) -detailed instructions for collection below.

Instructions
Collection of 4.5-5.0 mL of whole blood into a syringe, with subsequent transfer to the tubes provided in the kit, is the most efficient way of collecting the specimens because the tubes fill slowly, and this method keeps the tubes upright which makes filling to the mark easier.
1. Collect 1mL of whole blood into each of the 4 tubes - preferred order is grey/nil, then gold and green TB tubes, and the purple/mitogen tube last.
2. The blood must fill the tube to the black mark provided, or the collection will be rejected.
3. Immediately shake the tubes firmly for 5 seconds. The entire inner wall of the tube should be coated with blood. Shaking too hard will dislodge the gel in the tube and result in rejection.
4. Label the tubes carefully, ensuring that the black mark and area below it are exposed/visible.
5. Keep the tubes at room temperature until the tubes can be incubated. Deliver to Processing as soon as possible.
Processing Instructions for QuantiFERON Gold-Plus
1. Upon receipt check for the position of the gel barrier. If the tubes were centrifuged prior to incubation, the collection needs to be rejected.
2. Start incubation as soon as possible upon specimen receipt and within 16 hours of collection. Be sure to mix/invert the specimens for 5 seconds prior to placement in the incubator.
3. Incubate all 4 tubes, upright, at 37oC for 16-24 hours. Do not use a waterbath. Be sure to fill out the incubation log and set the timer.
4. When incubation is complete, centrifuge the tubes for 15 minutes at 3,000 RCF (g).
5. Transfer the tubes to the QNTF rack in the refrigerator for Special Chemistry pick-up.
