Preferred Specimen

30 mL amniotic fluid drawn under sterile conditions into a sterile amber amnio collection tube.

Minimum Volume

15 mL amniotic fluid drawn under sterile conditions into a sterile amber amnio collection tube.

Instructions

Make sure fluid is not contaminated with peripheral blood. This can inhibit amniocyte growth and can lead to maternal cell contamination
Place in the cytogenetic's bucket near chemistry

Specimen Stability

Amniotic Fluid: Ambient (preferred) Refrigerated (prolonged transport) NEVER FROZEN

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Insufficient sample, sample more than 4 days when received, bloody specimens, frozen, centrifuged
