Preferred Specimen
Serum 5mL (red top or gold top) before anti-toxin administration
Fresh stool in leak-proof container (10 g)
Enema (with sterile non-bacteriostatic water)
Food in original container (unopened commercial products NOT tested)


Instructions
Foodborne botulism: serum, stool, enema, food. Although not ideal, gastric contents may also be submitted.
Wound botulism: serum, debrided tissue, swab from wounds, stool (only if foodborne is also suspected).
Infant botulism: stool, enema, rectal swabs, potential sources (honey, opened formula, etc.)


Specimen Stability
Delivered to laboratory ASAP, refrigerate upon receipt in lab


Setup Schedule
Specimens shipped to CDC on Mon-Thursday ONLY. 


Report Available
Final written reports are provided within 12 weeks. Preliminary results may be available within 48 hours of specimen receipt.
