Clinical Significance
p120 immunostaining is primarily used to help primary used to distinguish between breast cancers with ductal and lobular differentiation. It is typically used in conjunction with E-cadherin IHC to help classify morphologically challenging breast cases.

p120 is a catenin encoded on chromosome 11q11. p120 catenin is primarily bound to E-cadherin at a juxtamembranous site, with a smaller amount bound in the cytoplasm. A deficiency of E-cadherin results in the intracytoplasmic accumulation of p120 catenin.

Cytoplasmic p120 catenin staining is seen in atypical lobular hyperplasia, lobular carcinoma in situ and invasive lobular carcinoma.

Membranous staining is seen in normal breast epithelium, ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive ductal carcinoma.
