Clinical Significance
Aid in diagnosing salivary duct carcinoma and in determining prostate origin in tumors of unknown primary.
Androgen receptor expression is broadly distributed across a variety of normal tissue types as well as in some carcinomas of the salivary
gland, breast, and prostate. Its primary use is in diagnosing salivary duct carcinoma and in determining prostate origin in tumors of
unknown primary. In prostate cancer, high expression of AR may be helpful in determining responsiveness to anti-androgen therapy. This
IHC may have other applications in certain breast carcinomas (apocrine), Paget’s disease and sebaceous carcinoma. Androgen
receptor IHC is a nuclear stain.
