Histopathologic examination of tissue sections stained with H&E, special stains, and additional analysis as indicated.
Preferred Specimen
- Breast: Tissue in a sterile collection cup or specimen container with 10% neutral buffered formalin.
- Breast Seeds: Fresh tissue in leakproof specimen container with lid. Specimen container should be marked with radioactive label. Notify Gross Room at 304-598-4130 prior to sending.
Minimum Volume
Surgical tissue greater than 2 - 3 mm
Instructions
- After 17:00 hours notify Pathology resident on call.
- Breast: Indicate time specimen placed in formalin. If 10% formalin is not available, deliver to Gross Room immediately. After hours, 10% formalin may be obtained in Gross Room and added to specimen container.
- Breast Radioactive Seeds: Specimen container should be marked with radioactive label. Indicate the number of seeds expected. Notify Gross Room at 304-598-4130 prior to sending.

- Deliver to Gross Room immediately.
- Monday-Friday: Before 07:00 and after 17:00 notify Pathology residnet on call.
- Weekends and Holidays: Notify Pathology resident on call.

Dried or inadequately handled specimen, unlabeled or improperly labeled specimen
