Includes
  • Sentinel Lymph Node: Histopathologic examination of tissue sections stained with H&E, special stains, and additional analysis as indicated.
  • Lymph Node:  Histopathological examination, touch preparation, and lymphoid cell marker studies including immunocytochemical and flow cytometric studies.


Preferred Specimen
  • Sentinel Lymph Node:  Fresh tissue in leak-proof container. Specimen container should be marked with radioactive label.
  • Lymph Node:  Fresh lymph node in a sterile container with lid.


Minimum Volume
Entire specimen, preferably more than 1.5 cubic centimeters.


Instructions
  • Sentinel Lymph Node: Specimen container should be marked with radioactive label.  Notify Gross Room at 304-598-4130 prior to sending.
  • Lymph Node: Indicate if specimen is for lymphoma protocol.

Specimen Stability
  • Unstable.  Deliver to Gross Room immediately.
  • Monday – Friday: Before 07:00 and after 17:00 notify Pathology resident on call.
  • Weekends and Holidays:  Notify Pathology resident on call.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimen on formalin.  Dried or inadequately handled specimen, unlabeled or improperly labeled specimen.
