Limitations
This assay detects cotinine, a major metabolite of nicotine, at the cut-off of 500 ng/mL in urine.   Cotinine may be present in the urine of individuals who smoke, chew tobacco,  inhale tobacco smoke produced by others, or who take medications containing cotinine.
