Specimen Stability
Separated from cells: 4 days room temp, 7 days refrigerated

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Icteric: >40 mg/dL bilirubin, Hemolysis: >200 mg/dL hemoglobin, Lipemia: >1000 mg/dL

Methodology
Timed Endpoint

Setup Schedule
Mon- Sun

Reference Range
UIBC: Adults:5 155 – 355 μg/dL
TIBC: 228-428 ug/dL

Clinical Significance
Serum iron concentration connotes the Fe (III) bound to serum transferrin and does not include the iron contained in
serum as free hemoglobin. Because normally only about one third of the iron binding sites of transferrin are
occupied by Fe (III), serum transferrin has considerable reserve Iron Binding Capacity. This is called the serum
Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC)
