PTT
Test CodeLAB325
Alias/See Also
Partial Thromboplastin Time, aPTT
CPT Codes
85730
Preferred Specimen
2.7 ml (2.7 ml minimum) sodium citrate (blue) whole blood. Refer to Hemostasis/Thrombosis Specimens section for specimen collection instructions
Minimum Volume
1.0 ml (1.0 ml minimum) citrated platelet-poor plasma
Instructions
Full tube, no partial fills
Specimen Stability
Unspun : 4 hours room temp; Separated from cells: 4 hours room temp, 2 weeks frozen
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Hemolysis: >500mg/dL hemoglobin, Lipemia: >1000mg/dL, Bilirubin: >30mg/dL.
Methodology
Mechanical Clot Detection, Calculated
Setup Schedule
Mon- Sun
Reference Range
23.8-37.9 seconds. ** NOTE: Reference interval established using 3.2% sodium citrate
Clinical Significance
The PTT is used for the evaluation of the intrinsic coagulation pathway (factors XII, XI, IX, VIII). Prolonged
clotting times may be observed in the following situations: deficiency of Factors II, V, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII or
fibrinogen, liver diseases, Vitamin K deficiency, presence of heparin, lupus anticoagulant or other inhibitor
