Preferred Specimen
Freshly voided urine sample collected in a sterile container. Specimen may be transferred to a yellow top urine tube prior to transport to lab, or may be submitted in any acceptable sterile container without additives or preservatives


Minimum Volume
Minimum: 200µL of urine is required


Specimen Stability
Stability after Collection: Room temp: 2 hours Refrigerated (2-8°): 72 hours Frozen: Do not freeze Sample Retention: 24 hours


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimen contains preservative or other additive, abnormally colored urines may cause interference.


Clinical Significance
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone secreted by the developing placenta
shortly after fertilization. The appearance and rise in the concentration of hCG in
urine aid in the early detection of pregnancy. Since hCG levels may be detectable
as early as 14 days after conception, hCG levels may be detected before a first
missed menses. False results may occur due to certain pathological conditions.
