Clinical Significance
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone secreted by the developing placenta
shortly after fertilization. The appearance and rise in the concentration of hCG in
urine aid in the early detection of pregnancy. Since hCG levels may be detectable
as early as 14 days after conception, hCG levels may be detected before a first
missed menses. False results may occur due to certain pathological conditions.
