MessageThe following list of medications and x-ray diagnostic aids may interfere with the test: iron, bismuth, oil (castor or mineral), particulate substances (metamucil or others), barium, gallbladder dye, iodine preparations, anti-amoebic drugs. Testing may be performed depending on the amount of contaminating material.

Specimen Stability
Preserved stool specimens: Stool must be placed into an Ova and Parasite Transport vial (Total Fix™) within 2 hours of collection.
Refrigerated specimens are acceptable.
DO NOT place specimens on ice.

Clinical Significance
Giardia is a protozoan that can cause diarrhea. Infection occurs after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Antigen detection is considered an alternative to stool examination.
