Blood culture for yeast - Blood, peripheral; Blood, red lumen
 


Transport Container
Wound: Eswab
Body fluid/tissue: sterile container with screw top lid
Urine: gray top tube
Blood:
  • Adult: Bottle Type: Plus+Aerobic/F MIN fill - 8ml MAX fill - 10ml and Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F MIN fill - 8ml MAX fill - 10ml
  • Pediatric: Bottle Type: Peds Plus/F/ MIN fill - 1ml MAX fill 3ml and Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F - based on patient weight - refer to  C B


Transport Temperature
Refrigerated
 


Specimen Stability
For eSwabs: Send to the Lab within 2 hours of collection. If specimen is received after 48 hours the specimen will be rejected and the culture cancelled.
For Fluid or Tissue: Send to the Lab within 30 minutes of collection. If specimen is received after 24 hours the specimen will be rejected and the culture cancelled.
For Urine Gray top: If specimen is received after 24 hours the specimen will be rejected and the culture cancelled.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Unacceptable specimens:
Culture for yeast

Non-sterile, insufficient volume or leaking container
Specimen received in VTM or preservative such as formalin or Cytolyte

Blood culture for yeast
A specimen received in an inappropriate container (e.g. vacutainer tube without blood culture broth media).


Clinical Significance
The significance of a yeast isolate varies with the organism identification, source, and clinical symptoms manifested.
