Preferred Specimen
Fresh specimen with no additives. Denote if cyst of mass and indicate specific site.
Container must be properly labeled with patient name and MRN. A hospital label is preferred. If aspiration is of a solid mass then specimen is a Fine Needle Aspiration and the FNA procedure should be followed.

Minimum Volume
1 ml Leak-proof container or Requires slide and fixative obtained from Lab - Cytology.
1 slide - Label slide using a # 2 pencil with patient's name and at least one additional identifier (DOB or MR#). Add site, if more than one submitted.
Fix immediately to prevent drying.

Instructions
Fresh/Unpreserved: Send to Cytology laboratory immediately or refrigerate until transported.
Cyst aspirate: the order should include the source as breast cyst with the specific site of aspiration.
Note: Different aspiration sites should be placed in separate containers and labeled appropriately with the specific site.
If slides submitted, write patient name and label 'A' air-dried and 'F' if fixed.
