Fresh specimen with no additives. Leak-proof container must be properly labeled with patient name and MRN. A hospital label is preferred.

Instructions
Fresh/Unpreserved:
Send to Cytology laboratory immediately or refrigerate until transported.
Note: Bile Aspirates for Crystals is not a Cytology test. If this is requested, a fresh specimen should be sent to Hematology.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Mislabeled specimen/requisition, unlabeled specimen/requisition, improperly labeled specimen or requisition, specimen leaked out of container, formalin added.

Specimen Received Sat/Sun - Reported Mon or Tues


Reference Range
Negative for malignancy


Clinical Significance
The microscopic exam of single cells mainly for cancer or precancerous lesions. However, the exam can also be used to diagnose some infectious organisms.
