BD Vacutainer® tubes have a minimum volume line molded on the tube, and the sample is unacceptable when the meniscus of the blood is below the molded line.
Instructions
- Deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Specimen must be centrifuged within an hour.
- Avoid drawing specimens from IV-lines or arterial lines, as they may become contaminated with heparin or the specimen may be diluted. If unavoidable, the IV must be turned off for at least 2 minutes and a minimum of 5 mL blood must be drawn as a discard prior to drawing the specimen to be tested.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimen not centrifuged within 1 hour of collection; centrifuged but not tested within 4 hours; specimen clotted or grossly hemolyzed.

Low dose/neurology UFH therapeutic range:
0.20 - 0.50 IU/mL
High does UFH therapeutic range:
0.30 - 0.70 IU/mL
This heparin assay is validated for Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) only. Patients on enoxaparin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, and betrixaban will have elevated results.
