Minimum Volume
BD Vacutainer® tubes have a minimum volume line molded on the tube, and the sample is unacceptable when the meniscus of the blood is below the molded line.


Instructions
  • Deliver to laboratory as soon as possible. Specimen must be centrifuged within an hour.
  • Avoid drawing specimens from IV-lines or arterial lines, as they may become contaminated with heparin or the specimen may be diluted.  If unavoidable, the IV must be turned off for at least 2 minutes and a minimum of 5 mL blood must be drawn as a discard prior to drawing the specimen to be tested.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimen not centrifuged within 1 hour of collection; centrifuged but not tested within 4 hours; specimen clotted or grossly hemolyzed.


Reference Range
Low dose/neurology UFH therapeutic range:
0.20 - 0.50 IU/mL

High does UFH therapeutic range:
0.30 - 0.70 IU/mL

This heparin assay is validated for Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) only. Patients on enoxaparin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, and betrixaban will have elevated results.


Clinical Significance
This test is used to monitor patients on Unfractionated Heparin.
