If the organism cannot be identified by the original method, then additional charges will be added for each organism: (CPT code(s) 87153: AFB Sequencing).
If TB is isolated for the first time or after three months after the first isolate from a patient, then susceptibilities will be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87190 per drug).
If M. avium complex (MAC), M. abscessus complex, M. chelonae, M. fortuitum group, M. kansasii, or M. marinum are isolated, then appropriate susceptibilities will automatically be performed at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87186 per organism).
If other Mycobacteria species are isolated, then appropriate susceptibilities can be performed at an additional charge if requested (CPT code(s): 87186 per organism).

Clinical Significance
There are more than 70 species of mycobacteria of which the primary pathogen is M. tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a chronic, granulomatous disease caused by M. tuberculosis. Identification, and, if appropriate, antibiotic susceptibility, is required to initiate necessary therapy
