CA 15-3

Message
CA 15-3 is not useful in breast cancer screening (poor sensitivity and specificity) but very useful in monitoring those breast cancers that produce this antigen (25-30% of advanced breast cancer do not shed CA 15-3 into circulation) for their response to treatment and to provide information on the tumor burden. Mild-moderate elevations of CA 15-3 may be seen in other conditions such as liver and pancreatic cancer, cirrhosis, benign breast disorders as well as in some apparently healthy individuals. Values obtained by different assay methods or kits may be different and cannot be used interchangeably. Test results cannot be interpreted as absolute evidence for the presence or absence of malignancy
